The only bad thing about it is that it goes off fast and I get worried about getting food that’s out of date

The out of date thing is blown out of proportion. The water melon is very easier to check, you cut a section, or cut in half and look and smell, if it looks and smells fresh – it is fresh and good to eat. It is the same with most fruits.
Yogurts and kefirs, you need to be careful, just a day or two over the date is usually fine, Meat, well, your nose will tell you if it is any good.
