 All humans have an automatic dive reflex. When your face is submerged in cold water or when you hold your breath, your heart slows and your blood vessels narrow to conserve oxygen.

Newborn babies can’t drown because their windpipes close in response to being submerged. However, that reflex disappears at six months (but we do NOT recommend testing this odd fact at home). – I did not know that!
